The Road To 100

Defining Leadership

The passage of the new immigration law in Arizona has brought forth two schools of leadership presently guiding cities, states, and yes, even our country.

As anyone not living in a comatose state for the past few weeks has heard, Arizona has passed new immigration legislation.  The law came as a result of kidnappings and home invasions which have become the norm in Arizona for years.  Phoenix is now second in the world for the number of kidnappings for ransom per year, only Mexico City has more.  Last year alone, Phoenix had over 370 reported kidnappings.  Many of the kidnap victims are tortured, returning with missing hands or fingers that have been crushed.  It is hard to imagine a city within the United States being second in the world for such a dangerous and violent crime.

Arizona lawmakers decided that they needed to step up and do something to rein in the rampant crime in their state.  They passed legislation that mirrors the federal immigration laws.  The legislation states that if local authorities detain a person for a crime, and there is a reason to suspect the person may be in the country illegally, then they are to investigate the status of the individual.  The law simply allows the local authorities to enforce the laws that the federal authorities haven’t.

Then came the protests.  It started with Cardinal Roger Mahoney, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles, in a blog post dated April 18, 2010.  He states,

“The tragedy of the law is its totally flawed reasoning: that immigrants come to our country to rob, plunder, and consume public resources. That is not only false, the premise is nonsense.”

The only tragedy here is that Cardinal Mahoney doesn’t actually write about what is reflected in the law.  The law is aimed at illegal immigration, not immigrants in general.  Immigration is one of the ingredients that has gone into making the United States a great country.  I hope people aren’t against immigration, my hope is that people will see the value of cracking down on illegal immigration.  The two, legal immigration versus illegal immigration, actually have very little to do with one another.

The Cardinal goes on to write about the new law impeding our ability to fill the labor pool in the United States in the coming years.  One can only assume that the Cardinal is unaware of the 10% unemployment rate among legal residents of our country.  Besides that, and the rant about Arizona “reverting to German Nazi and Russian Communist techniques whereby people are required to turn one another in to the authorities on any suspicion of documentation,” which is not anywhere in the legislation, there was a line that struck me.  The Cardinal writes,

”I have met so many of our immigrant families and I am in awe at their love for our country, their care and concern for their children, and their resourcefulness in helping to improve our communities, our way of life, and our economic future.”

Doesn’t it strike anyone as rather odd that a person with such a deep love for our nation would begin their life in this country be breaking some of its laws?  One would think that a person with such a love for the United States would want to come in legally, proudly, and respecting the laws of the nation for which they proclaim such love.

Since the Cardinal’s blog piece, I have read of protests from coast-to-coast.  Cities from San Diego to Boston have voted to boycott Arizona because of the this new law.  Boston’s mayor went so far as to say,

Mayor Tom Menino: “It is so outrageous at this time in our county’s history.”

Boston Mayor Tom Menino says the city has a million dollar contract with a software company in Arizona called N-Focus. The mayor told NECN that he is drafting a letter to the company to find out if its execs support the new Arizona law.

Mayor Tom Menino: “If they don’t agree with my position, we are gonna have to take some legal action, it is a million dollar contract, it is a great program of tracking our young people, but if this company is going to discriminate against anyone, they are not going to do it on my dime.” (emphasis added)

So, Mr. Mayor, if someone does not agree with your position, then they are not allowed to do business with the City of Boston.

Of course, the President of the United States has chimed in by saying,

President Obama suggested today that the immigration bill expected to be signed into law in Arizona is a “misguided” piece of legislation that “threatened to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe. “

Ask the people of Phoenix how that is working for them, Mr. President.

Even Mexico is unhappy with the new law in Arizona.  According to the AP,

Mexico’s Foreign Relations Department said in a statement relayed through Mexico’s U.S. embassy that it viewed the measure with great concern and said it “could have potentially serious effects on the civil rights” of Mexican nationals.

Mexican nationals here legally will be just fine, Mexican nationals here illegally and committing crimes however….

Take a minute and try to come up with the one thing that is missing in all these condemnations of the immigration legislation in Arizona.  Seriously, before you read on, try to figure out what is missing.  Go back and read the links if that will help.

Give up?

The one thing that is missing from the sea of criticism is what is lacking from many of our leaders in America.  None of the above is offering a solution.  Condemn Arizona?  “Absolutely!”  Offer a solution?  “Uh…Well…No, but I think what they are doing is wrong!”

Isn’t it amazing how people thousands of miles away can turn their backs on the legal citizens of Arizona, in support for illegal aliens, but none have offered to help.  Arizona’s crime rate is through the roof.  Most of us cannot imagine living in or near a city where there is a kidnapping rate greater than one per day!  Most of America has no idea what it’s like to live in a city where it is unsafe to go out, day or night.  These are the things that the people of Arizona deal with each and every day.  Meanwhile, cities across the country line up to boycott the businesses owned by legal residents of the State of Arizona, further hurting fellow Americans who truly do love their country.

Well Cardinal Mahoney, any ideas?  How about you, Mr. Mayor?  Mr. President, what do you suggest?  That’s what I thought, the definition of modern leadership, tear down others’ ideas without bringing anything to the table yourself.  I know very little about the Governor of Arizona, Jan Brewer, but I do know that even with the mountain of criticism facing her, she stepped up and is trying to do something to solve a big problem in her state.  Other leaders would do well to follow her lead in their own jurisdictions.

By the way, as leaders stand back and criticize, almost three-quarters of Americans support the provision of the new Arizona law that requires people to produce documents verifying they are in the U.S. legally.

Madame Governor, your actions are displaying true leadership.

**UPDATE  Further confirmation that the Feds won’t allow the facts get in the way of a good arguement when it comes to the new immigration law in Arizona.  Eric Holder, the United States Attorney General, has been very critical of Arizona’s new immigration law, going so far as to state that the United States is considering challenging the new law in court.  There is only one problem with his critique of the legislation, he hasn’t actually read the ten pages that constitute the law yet.  The video below is less than four minutes long but must be seen.

Next On The President’s Agenda…

The White House announced that on Friday President Obama will discuss a memorandum which the President hopes will reshape the conservation policy of the United States.  He will have four administration officials take charge of the effort to overcome new environmental threats in a time where finding the money to pay for new initiatives is a challenge.

Promises to tackle the jobs issue... As soons as he gets a chance.

Hopefully, after the nuclear weapons summit, the financial reform, and the new environmental initiatives, the President will then get started on the one topic he promised would be priority number one for 2010:  Jobs!

Is unemployment still a crisis in the United States?

Louisiana Purchase Helps Hawaii?

Many people have been concerned about the special deals made to Senators to gain their support for the health care reform bill.  One of the most publicized special deals was the promise of hundreds of millions of dollars made to Louisiana for a yes vote by one of their senators.  During a very recent interview on Fox, President Obama justified the special deal by saying that the deal will benefit other states going through natural disasters… such as the earthquake in Hawaii.

This is how we justify the government taking over the nation’s health care?  If the bill is as good for the nation as Nancy Pelosi and President Obama claim, then these back room deals and new rules to allow representatives to vote for the bill without actually voting for the bill wouldn’t be necessary.  Why can’t this bill just stand on its own?

By the way, can anyone send me a link to the story about the earthquake in Hawaii?

What Happened?

Forgetting our Vice-President’s counting ability, he made it clear during the final push of the presidential campaign that jobs was at the top of the agenda should Barrack Obama be elected president.  He was elected president and instead of jobs being the top priority, President Obama has spent the first 25% of presidency focused on health care reform.  That focus on health care instead of jobs played a large role in the election of Scott Brown, a Republican put in place by the voters of one of the most liberal states in the Country to replace an icon in the Democratic Party.

It appeared that the message was received by the White House, for during the State of the Union address delivered on January 27 President Obama announced, “Jobs must be our number-one focus in 2010.”

Both parties of Congress gave the President a standing ovation at this point in the speech.  Congress, as well as the President, seemed to understand that putting people back to work should be the focus of their efforts going forward.

So what has the White House been focused since the State of the Union address?  Health Care Reform, of course.  Go to the White House web site and you’re bombarded with health care rhetoric.  And now it looks as if the White House has finally figured out a way to pass this unpopular piece of legislation, through reconciliation, and force it upon a population who don’t want it.

How will the Democrats bypass the will of the people?

Before I get into that, how does a bill usually make it through Congress?  First, a bill will pass through the House of Representatives.  Often changes are made to appease enough members of the House to get the bill to pass.  The bill then moves on to the Senate.  Again, changes are made to garner enough votes for it to pass.  In the Senate, however, a senator (or group of senators) may filibuster against a bill, not allowing the bill to come to a vote.  A filibuster can be broken by a vote of 3/5 majority (60 out of 100).  Once a bill gets through the Senate, the bill then goes to a committee of senators and representatives.  The committee’s responsibility is to come to a compromise on the different versions of the bill that came out of the House and the Senate.  Once the compromise bill is reached, it goes back to the House for a second vote and then to the Senate for a second vote.  Once passed by both chambers, the single bill goes to the president for his signature.  That is what is supposed to happen.

In the case of President Obama’s Health Care Bill, the House of Representatives and the Senate each passed very different versions of the bill.  The two bills were then to go to committee to be rewritten as one bill.  While in committee, however, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts elected Scott Brown who had campaigned that he would be the 41st senator against the health care bill, therefore allowing a filibuster to keep the bill from ever being voted on by the Senate.  The people of Massachusetts, and according to every published poll I could find the citizens of the country, made it clear they did not want this health care bill to pass.  The election of Senator Brown seemed to kill the health care bill in its present state.

Not so fast.  Congressional Democrats and the White House have found a way to get this bill passed without having to worry about a senate filibuster.  Nancy Pelosi has pressured enough representatives to pass the senate version of the bill as it is presently written, without committee work to compromise between the two chambers.  The House will then pass a second bill to “fix” the first bill.  Both bills then move on out of the House.  The senate does not have to vote on a bill that it has already passed, so the health care bill will move on to the president.  The senate will vote on the “fix” bill the House passed in a process called reconciliation.  A reconciliation bill, by rule, is limited to 20 hours of debate, meaning it cannot be filibustered.  The Democratic leaders in the Senate have “promised to fix” the senate bill, but in fact may choose to fix some or none of the bill.  Either way, the Health Care Reform Bill makes it to the president for his signature.

It gets even better.  Democrats have had difficulty getting a bill that would allow a government takeover of the student loan program any where near the sixty votes required to push it through the Senate.  Nancy Pelosi has announced that she will attach the Student Loan Reform Bill to the “fixes” that get sent to the senate, which means Democrats can get this bill through without fear of filibuster as well.  What does student loans have to do with “fixes” to a health care bill.  Nothing really, but that isn’t the point.  Since Democrats have decided to take on health care on their own, they figure why not attach another piece of legislation they know will get filibustered if presented as a seperate bill.  It is very sneaky, but a brilliant way to get what you want when a large portion of the population doesn’t agree with you.

The government will takeover health care and student loans all at the same time.

Will it stop there?  Good question.  Many believe this is the first step to a single payer system such as Canada’s.

Canada’s single payer system seems to work fine except when you need actual serious care.  Take for example the case of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Premier Danny Williams (a premier is similar to a governor).  When he required a serious heart operation, he decided to take on the expense himself and travel to the United States for the operation.

An unapologetic Danny Williams says he was aware his trip to the United States for heart surgery earlier this month would spark outcry, but he concluded his personal health trumped any public fallout over the controversial decision.

In an interview with The Canadian Press, Williams said he went to Miami to have a “minimally invasive” surgery for an ailment first detected nearly a year ago, based on the advice of his doctors.

“This was my heart, my choice and my health,” Williams said late Monday from his condominium in Sarasota, Fla.

“I did not sign away my right to get the best possible health care for myself when I entered politics.”

The 60-year-old Williams said doctors detected a heart murmur last spring and told him that one of his heart valves wasn’t closing properly, creating a leakage.

He said he was told at the time that the problem was “moderate” and that he should come back for a checkup in six months.

Eight months later, in December, his doctors told him the problem had become severe and urged him to get his valve repaired immediately or risk heart failure, he said.

His doctors in Canada presented him with two options – a full or partial sternotomy, both of which would’ve required breaking bones, he said.

He said he spoke with and provided his medical information to a leading cardiac surgeon in New Jersey who is also from Newfoundland and Labrador. He advised him to seek treatment at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami.

That’s where he was treated by Dr. Joseph Lamelas, a cardiac surgeon who has performed more than 8,000 open-heart surgeries.

Williams said Lamelas made an incision under his arm that didn’t require any bone breakage.

A Canadian government official decides to come to the United States to have treatment he couldn’t get in Canada, and this is the direction the president and Mrs. Pelosi are trying to take us?   No wonder they need to bend the rules to get health care reform passed.

Of course, the bill isn’t actually complete yet.  And if you are thinking you would like to read it before it gets passed, well listen to what Speaker Pelosi said at the 2010 Legislative Conference for National Association of Counties on March 9th.

Now that’s transparency!

Scott Brown’s Radio Address

Below is the transcript of Senator Scott Brown’s radio address.

“Hello, I’m United States Senator Scott Brown from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

“When the people of my state elected me in January, they sent more than a senator to Washington – they sent a message. Across party lines, the voters told politicians in Washington to get its priorities right.

“And from my travels and conversation with people throughout this country, they told me that they want their President and Congress to focus on creating jobs and reviving America’s economy. Instead, for more than a year now, we have seen a bitter, destructive, and endless drive to completely transform America’s health care system.

“In January of last year, unemployment hit 7.2 percent and our economy was hurting badly. But, early in President Obama’s term, he and the Democratic leadership of Congress made takeover of health care their first priority.

“Today, times are even tougher across our nation when it comes to our economy. Nearly one in ten Americans are still out of work. And still, the President and Congress are focused on ramming through their health-care bill, whatever it takes, whatever the cost.

“Maybe you remember what President Obama promised in his State of the Union address. He said he was going to finally focus on jobs and the economy for the remainder of this year. I applauded him for that. Well, here it is, it’s almost spring. And what is he out there talking about again? That same 2,700-page, multi-trillion dollar health care legislation.

“So, an entire year has gone to waste. Millions of Americans have lost their jobs, and many more jobs are in danger. Even now, the President still hasn’t gotten the message.

“Somehow, the greater the public opposition to the health care bill, the more determined they seem to force it on us anyway. Their attitude shows Washington at its very worst – the presumption that they know best, and they’re going to get their way whether the American people like it or not.

“And, when politicians start thinking like that, they don’t let anything get in their way – not public opinion, not the rules of fair play, not even their own promises.

“They pledged transparency. Instead, we have a health care bill tainted by secrecy, concealed cost, and full of backroom deals– and that’s just not right. They should do better. The American people expect more.

“They pledged a true bipartisan effort. Instead, they have resorted to bending the rules, and they now intend to seize control of health care in America on a strict party-line vote.

“In speech after speech on his health care plan, the President has tried to convince us that what he is proposing will be good for America. But, how can it be good for America if it raises taxes by a half trillion dollars and costs a trillion dollars or more to implement? In addition, how can it be good if it takes another half a trillion dollars away from seniors on Medicare, and still includes all the backroom deals you have been hearing about for months?

“Well, for the past year or more, the new establishment in Washington has tried again and again to sell this plan to the American people. But the Americans aren’t buying it, and for good reason. And now, what’s going on is a last, desperate power play. They actually tell us that passing the bill is necessary, if only to prove that something can get done in Washington.

“Well, I haven’t been here very long, but, I can tell you this much already: Nothing has distracted the attention and energy of the nation’s capital more than this disastrous detour. And, the surest way to return to the people’s business is to listen to the people themselves: We need to drop this whole scheme of federally controlled health care, start over, and work together on real reforms at the state level that will contain costs and won’t leave America trillions of dollars deeper in debt.

“This, above all, was the message that the people of my state sent to the President and the Congress in the election over a month ago.

“You know some of my Democratic colleagues, you know, are being leaned on mighty hard right now. Speaker Pelosi and others are handing down their marching orders, telling them to vote for this bill no matter what. Rarely have elected leaders been so intent on defying the public will. For many members of Congress, the time for choosing is near – do what the party leadership demands, or do what the people have asked you to do. If my colleagues don’t mind some advice from a newcomer, I’d suggest going with the will of the people.

“After all, from the very beginning of this debate, the American people have called it correctly. In every part of the country, Republicans and Democrats have agreed on serious, straightforward, commonsense health care reform. They expect us in Washington to do the same – working together, acting fairly and by the rules, and staying focused on the need to make the American economy as strong as it can be. That is the business that brought me here on an unexpected journey to Washington. And, it’s the responsibility of everyone sent here to serve our country. We can do better – and I challenge my colleagues and the President to do just that.

“I’m Senator Scott Brown and thank you very much for listening.”

Praying I’m Wrong

You win some, you lose some, and some get rained out.

Everyday I read a blog written by my friend Marty Holman.  Marty is a popular minister in a local church and a heck of a basketball player.  He and I have become friends after playing together on a basketball team for the past few years.  There are many reasons I enjoy being around Marty, among them is the fact that he challenges me to think.  Don’t take that the wrong way, Marty does not push nor even wear his religion on his sleeve.  Instead, he lives his life trying to be more Christ-like without telling everyone how virtuous he is.

This past Tuesday, after reading Marty’s reflection on a game we had lost the previous evening, I began to think about losing.  In life, losing is inevitable.  While coaching at Wachusett, we put together a forty game winning streak.  My players gained so much confidence that we wound up winning games even when it looked for sure like we would lose.  The streak started toward the end of one season, continued through an entire season the following year, and into a third season.  It just felt like we would never lose again.  Of course, we did.  I didn’t sleep for two nights.  I hate to lose.

Marty’s post made me start thinking about losing in areas other than just sports.  As I have grown older, my interest in politics and the world around me has grown.  Age has also found me becoming more conservative than in my younger days.  Officially registered as unenrolled, lately I have been supporting Republicans more than Democrats.  While I respect everyone who steps into the political arena for the right reasons, I lean more toward smaller government and less spending.  I have moved to the right of the younger Bogey.

Then came President Obama.

There has not been a political leader I have feared more than President Obama.  His beliefs are opposite of mine on almost every major issue.  President Obama was recently quoted that he believes our government must spend our way out of this recession in which we are currently mired.  Combine that with health care reform and Cap and Trade, it won’t be long before we will be reflecting on the days when our national debt was only 12 trillion dollars.  Sorry, I don’t mean to preach.

The point is this, on November 4, 2008 conservative thinking Americans, such as myself, had to face losing.

Watching how people face losing has interested me for as long as I can remember.  When I was growing up, I was what one might call a very poor loser.  I hated losing and let everyone know it every time I found myself on the losing end of any contest.  It appears many adults today are much like the child I once was.  There are people attacking the president on every front, including personal.  Let’s face it, nobody likes to lose.

I don’t pray nearly enough, but I have turned to prayer to help me deal with losing.  I pray for our new president and the people with whom he has surrounded himself.  I pray for our nation to recover from this recession and to return to the glory we once enjoyed.  I pray for our military personnel putting their lives on the line each day for the safety of American citizens around the world.

Most of all, I pray that I am wrong.  Maybe the president’s ideas are the right way to go.  Maybe he can pull us out of the recession and then reduce the national debt without inflation going through the roof.  Perhaps we can strengthen our position in the world while not being a big supporter of the armed forces.  He is my President and I will pray his decisions are correct.

If not, I’ll pray he loses on Tuesday, November 6, 2012!

Speaking of sore losers, take a look at the clip below.  Is this really how some people pray?  Let’s pray this guy’s prayers are not answered.

Message From a Mayor

If you read this blog regularly, you know I can be critical of President Obama.  I like to believe that my criticism is based on philosophical differences, not on personal attacks.  I believe that it is important for every American to question our leaders, and that the strength of our country lies in the fact that we can, and at times are encouraged, to question our elected officials.  I also like to believe that I question conservatives as well as liberals, holding all elected officials to high standards.  Finally, I believe that I praise officials as well when circumstances warrant.

I always question or praise our elected officials with a great deal of respect.

Today I came across a story that made me stop and wonder why some public officials don’t think before they speak or post things on the internet.  The mayor of Arlington, Tennessee is a man named Russell Wiseman.  Mr. Wiseman has been the mayor of this community of approximately 9,700 residents since 2003.  Tuesday night he settled in with his children for the evening, like many Americans, expecting to watch a seasonal favorite, ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas.’  Much to the mayor’s dismay, Charlie Brown was preempted for a speech by President Obama regarding sending 30,000 more troops to fight in Afghanistan.  Mr. Wiseman was apparently upset that the cartoon would not be shown that night and posted the following on his Facebook page:

“Ok, so, this is total crap, we sit the kids down to watch ‘The Charlie Brown Christmas Special’ and our muslim president is there, what a load…..try to convince me that wasn’t done on purpose. Ask the man if he believes that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and he will give you a 10 minute disertation (sic) about it….w…hen the answer should simply be ‘yes’….”

Arlington, Tennessee Mayor Russell Wiseman

The mayor continues to attack the President, the President’s supporters, and muslims:

“…you obama people need to move to a muslim country…oh wait, that’s America….pitiful.”

According to an online story, Mr. Wiseman also writes:

“you know, our forefathers had it written in the original Constitution that ONLY property owners could vote, if that has stayed in there, things would be different……..”

The story goes on to say that when Mr. Wiseman was contacted for a response, “It’s ridiculous for someone to send my Facebook post,” Wiseman said. “You guys are trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.”

No sir, it is not ridiculous.  You are the one who chose to run for mayor of your town.  You decided to make yourself a public figure.  No one would have cared if Russell Wiseman, bank vice-president and commercial lender, had posted those comments to Facebook.  When a mayor, a political figure, posts those comments, then people will care.

We are obligated to question our political leaders.  Fair and open debate has been a part of our country’s history since its birth.  Personal and unwarranted attacks on our President, Democrat or Republican, because your Christmas cartoon didn’t air is just plain ridiculous.

Mr. Mayor, do you really believe our President decided to deliver his speech at that time so a Christmas cartoon would not be shown?

By the way, according to the ABC web site, ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ will air Tuesday, December 8 and Tuesday, December 15.  Below is a clip from the holiday classic.  Enjoy.

Enemy Territory

More of our troops are headed to “the enemy camp.”

I have received four emails asking me my opinion of the president’s speech regarding sending 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan.  The president has been criticized, and rightly so, for taking so long to draft a strategy for proceeding with the war in Afghanistan.  He stated that he needed to be sure the best possible plan was in place before he would commit our young men and women to fight.  This makes me wonder how the mothers and fathers of young people already deployed in this God forsaken place must feel.  Their children are putting their lives on the line everyday, why must their children be put in harm’s way before our Commander-in-Chief develops his wartime strategy.

No president wants to be a wartime president, and clearly, President Obama is no exception.  I can’t begin to imagine how difficult it must be to order our young men and women of the military into harms way.  This is a task no caring individual can possibly take lightly.  I don’t believe it excuses the amount of time it has taken to develop an Afghan strategy, but one can certainly understand the care and effort being put forth.

As for the speech itself, so far, reviews by “experts” have been mixed.  The greatest amount of controversy revolves around the timeline outlined by the president.  President Obama stated that the troops will be sent with the expectation that withdrawal from Afghanistan will begin in 18 months.  There are many, on both sides of the political aisle, who are stating that the timeline is ridiculous.  The goal should be victory, and that war is not fought with an overhead clock.  Many wonder what will happen in 18 months if we have not yet achieved victory, a word not actually used in his speech.  Others say that a timetable is necessary to motivate the Afghans to take charge of their own fate.  That without it the Afghans would sit back and continue to let us do their dirty work.  While I don’t think letting the enemy know that they have 18 months to plan their strategy for when we leave is a good idea, President Obama has the advice of people far more intelligent than myself.  The best I can do is pray that our president is right and pray for the members of our armed forces who will be fighting on our behalf.

By the way, wouldn’t it be ridiculous if an American ever referred to members of the United States military as the enemy.  Actually, this is exactly what a member of the media did immediately following the President’s speech.  The President outlined his plan in a speech at West Point.  An audience of cadets apparently were less than enthusiastic for what the President had to say.  Their response to the speech prompted MSNBC’s Chris Matthews to make the following comment:

I don’t know what will be the final outcome of President Obama’s new Afghanistan strategy.  I do know that it is sad when an American says that the Commander-in-Chief speaking at West Point in front of members of our military is in “the enemy camp.”  This comment is unforgivable and he should be reprimanded.  These men and women, the so-called enemy, are preparing to risk their lives to protect the very freedoms that allow an ass such as Chris Matthews to make such a comment.  Both the far left and the far right are capable of some ridiculous remarks, but no one should be insulting the men and women in uniform who take their orders and fight on our behalf.

Those cadets are not the enemy, Mr. Matthews, they are preparing to fight our enemies.  Don’t insult them, get on your knees and thank God for them!

Update:  According to one of Europe’s largest weekly magazines, Der Spiegel (“The Mirror”), the cadets at West Point were coached to give an enthusiastic response to President Obama’s speech.  From Der Spiegel:

One can hardly blame the West Point leadership.  The academy commanders did their best to ensure that Commander-in-Chief Obama’s speech would be well-received.

Just minutes before the president took the stage inside Eisenhower Hall, the gathered cadets were asked to respond “enthusiastically” to the speech.  But it didn’t help:  The soldiers’ reception was cool.

Navy SEALs charged with Assault

AP Photo

Is this the way we believe Americans should be treated?

The well-known photo above has been seen worldwide.  It shows the badly charred bodies of two Americans hanging from a bridge that stretches across the Euphrates River in Fallujah, Iraq.  The Americans are two of the four Blackwater USA security guards who were ambushed while transporting supplies for a catering company.  They were killed by gunfire and grenades, their bodies burned, dragged through the streets of Fallujah, then two of them hung from the bridge.  It was later determined that a man named Ahmed Hashim Abed was the mastermind behind the ambush.  He quickly became one of the most wanted terrorists in Iraq, with the military giving him the code-name “Objective Amber.”

Earlier this year, the Navy SEALs hunted down and captured Ahmed Hashim Abed.  Now three of these SEALs are facing court-martial hearings for allegedly giving this wanted terror suspect a bloody lip.  From the Fox News web site:

Ahmed Hashim Abed, whom the military code-named “Objective Amber,” told investigators he was punched by his captors — and he had the bloody lip to prove it.

Now, instead of being lauded for bringing to justice a high-value target, three of the SEAL commandos, all enlisted, face assault charges and have retained lawyers.

One of the most dangerous men in Iraq, as proclaimed by the United States, complained about being punched by our Navy SEALs and now they are being charged with assault?  We are taking this idea of showing the world how much we care about alleged terrorists’ rights too far.  Try to put yourself in the shoes of the brave men and women of our armed forces.  The elite forces of the Navy SEALs capture one of the most wanted terror suspects in one of the most dangerous hot spots in the world, ends up with a bloody lip (probably should be dead), and our guys are being court-martialed?  Why would I enlist in special forces?  Heck, why enlist in the military at all?  How can anyone feel good about defending a country whose leaders can’t stand the military?

What message are we sending with these charges?  The message is that if you are caught by the American Military Elite for killing Americans, put up a little bit if a fight, get a fat lip, and you can take out three more.  American leaders are now so concerned with world image that they are now willing to take down some of their own to make our enemies feel better about us.

Make no mistake, I have no idea whether or not these men are guilty of the crimes for which they have been charged, which include dereliction of performance of duty for willfully failing to safeguard a detainee, making a false official statement, and assault.  Honestly, I don’t really care.  There is no way these three should face court-martial because of a bloody lip.

It is time For President Obama to use his pardon powers yet again.  That’s right, I mean yet again.  President Obama just pardoned a turkey named “Courage” on the front lawn of the White House.  Now is the time for President Obama to display some courage and pardon these three Navy SEALs and send the message that our brave men and women of the armed forces have the backing of the people for whom they are charged with defending.

The court-martial of three Navy SEAL commandos due to the bloody lip of a highly sought after, dangerous, terror suspect…

Is this the way we believe Americans should be treated?

I am not, nor will I ever be, president of the United States.

During the campaign that concluded last November, then Sen. Obama promised to bring Americans from both sides of the political aisle together.  It seems that reaching across the aisle to work with Republicans to bring about true change for Americans has come to an end.  Instead, our President has decided to return to Washington politics as usual.

I am just a marketing executive for a medium-sized company, so I do not have the credentials of President Obama.  I do believe, however, that insulting people who do not necessarily think as I do makes inspiring people to work together a more difficult task.

By the way, isn’t asking Democrats to be unified, to not be opinionated, the same as asking them to do as they are told?

Then again, I will never be president of the United States.
