This is true on so many levels I cant list now. Accountability and responsability are things todays society seem to be breading out of our children. Insted of dealing with a bully we say let others deal with him. In other words insted of punching him in the mouth ,cry and go tell the teacher (sorry Peter). I would rather get a call from the school saying my daughter beat someone up becouse they were bullying her than one that said she let her self be beat up and ran to tell someone. Here she would be suspende of course becouse of the "zero tollerance guidelined" but back to school with limited damage. These protesters are the net result of a country gone soft. They want it all but feel someone else should pay for it. At least the hippies in the 60s have the excuse of being high.

Wes - Thank you for commenting on my post. I think, however, you may have missed the main idea of the post. I thoroughly enjoyed Philladelphia. There are few cities that can rival Philly for both history and charm. My lack of rhythm while on my visit was in no way a reflection of Philly, for running in any major city will produce the same obstacles. The purpose of my post goes way beyond Philly and actually questions political ideology. Philadelphia didn't appear to have any more, or less, of a homeless problem than that of any major American city. Please know that I look forward to again spending time in your great city!

You have an interesting perspective on Philly. You really should spend some more time here. I do like that you walk the line between our good and bad and I think that is what I love about this city so much. However, while the homeless situation in Philly is more visible than New York, San Francisco, or Boston, it isn't any worse. Public and private resources offer plenty of places for the homeless to eat and there are plenty of non-profit rehabilitation centers and shelters. The difference between Philly and other cities is that here the police turn a blind eye to them unless they are breaking serious laws, leaving those who choose to be on the street on the street. These sorts of decidedly homeless people are in all big cities, they're just typically hidden from plain site. I will admit, jogging through Center City can be very stop-and-go, and in a city this dense you're going to run into smokers and funky smells, but it's not all bad. It's not as gross as it is in the famous Rocky scene. It's funny because a lot of people come here with that iconic image looking for that "rhythm", and don't realize that the scene was used for its imagery, deliberately using locales all over the city that painted Philadelphia as a bleak place, but it wasn't a real jog. Believe me, Philly has a rhythm, but if you're looking for a good jog you need to go past the Parkway, behind the Art Museum towards Boathouse Row or south towards the Schuylkill Banks River Trail, or over into West Philly or up towards the zoo and into Manayunk. Jogging through the core of any dense city is going to be stop-and-go and lined with foul smells. You really have to know a city - or know someone to show you its secrets - to really find its rhythm. Otherwise every American city is just going to be a big, loud, dirty place.
